The Least Fractious Thoat

Two rants for the price of one

Yes, actually, it is important to write properly, i.e. with words that mean the things you're trying to say, with punctuation used as punctuation and not decoration, with sufficiently correct grammar that the reader doesn't have to put in serious effort to understand what you're even on about, etc. If you are writing to convey an idea, it is in your interest to learn how to convey it clearly.

No, actually, it is not anybody's bounden duty to ~continually improve their craft~ past a certain point of basic intelligibility. Writing is like cooking: you really ought to be competent in the basics, but not everybody is required to be super fucking intense about it. You don't need to be Shakespeare in order to express your ideas and you don't need to be Gordon Ramsay in order to feed yourself.

No, actually, it is not cruel and unusual persecution of the free spirit to suggest to someone, politely and in private, that not every sentence needs to contain three commas minimum and that in fact some sentences are easier to parse without any, or that "whimsy" is a noun and not an adjective.

Yes, actually, it is rude as fuck to come at an internet stranger with a scathing critique of their mediocre prose in a blog post they made to vent about their crappy day at work. You are not their editor, you are not their professor, you are not even their audience. You do not have a "duty" to snipe at people. Sometimes it is okay - nay, even correct - to just shut up and enjoy your intellectual superiority or whatever.

Okay? Now everybody shut up and get back to blogging, for frog's sake.

In the interests of taking my own advice, I am going to use small words here.

Anything that trends is going to be immediately seized on by The Corporations™ and aggressively appropriated, monetized, exploited, and packaged for consumption. That's just what unchecked capitalism does. We know this.

However. Not every trend is manufactured out of whole cloth by The Corporations™ for the express purpose of being aggressively monetized, etc. The bullet journal thing, the "going analog" thing, the ✨whimsy✨ thing, those are all actual things. They attracted enough people that The Corporations™ took notice, sat up and said hey, you know what we should aggressively appropriate, monetize, exploit and package for consumption so as to make an extra 8 gazillion dollars this quarter? That!

There is no interest that capitalism can't and won't exploit. That does not mean that the capitalists invented interests. Not every teenager who just wants to feel a trace of genuine joy in this hellscape by wearing a flower crown and pretending she's a woodland fairy is a corporate shill. Calm down.
